An Austrian composer and singer of popular music whose career spanned over 50 years. He is considered one of the most important entertainers of the 20th and early 21st centuries, won the Eurovision Song Contest 1966 for Austria, composed close to 1,000 songs, and sold over 100 million records. He holds the record as the most frequently represented German-speaking singer. In 1992, he played on the Donauinsel in Vienna in front of around 220,000 spectators. A trademark of his live concerts were the encores, which he always sang in a white bathrobe.
